Cognitive Behavior Therapy

There are many, many different ways (or modalities) therapists can work effectively with and for a client. For children, play therapy is one of the ways I have found a lot of success. After all, play is kids’ most natural form of communication! Traditional talk therapy is probably the most common method of all, and can work really well regardless of a patient’s age. When it comes down to on-paper data though, the single most proven modality is Cognitive Behavior Therapy.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy, or CBT, is the practice of identifying and addressing the client’s thoughts or behaviors that might be unhelpful to their goals. This will look different for every client/provider relationship!

A client experiencing depression, for instance, may know full well that their unproductive, and even counterproductive thoughts and behaviors stem from their depression. But, with the guidance of a counselor experienced with CBT, they may come to understand those internal obstacles better. Then they can work to remove those obstacles, often lessening the symptoms of depression!

It may seem simple, but there are a number of potential missteps one can take if practicing this modality independently. It’s very important to refrain from doing so, and instead, walk through the process with a licensed mental health professional.

That’s one of the many reasons we at Crossing Bridges Counseling are delighted to introduce our newest team member. When you see her around the office, please give a warm welcome to Tamara Mobley-Wicker!
