Selecting a counselor can be a daunting task. Whether it is for you or someone you love, it is understandable that you want to pick “the best”. But how do you begin to quantify “the best”?

Let’s start by drilling down a bit. Perhaps “the best” is a bit broad. Maybe what you should focus on is “the best for you” or your loved one. Just like any other profession, counselors specialize in different fields and issues. The perfect counselor for you, might not be the same for someone else. That helps and takes a load off!

A great place to start is with your insurance provider. Often you can obtain a list of local therapists and counselors in your area. Additionally, you are sometimes also provided their areas of expertise as well.

If your insurance company doesn’t offer a list or perhaps you don’t have insurance, the world wide web is another avenue that offers easy access. Read up on the counselors you are considering and make a short list of the ones that seem to be a good fit.

Next, it is time to start making some phone calls or filling out some contact forms. You want to reach out to your short list of therapists and find out if they are indeed accepting new patients. During this phase you can often find additional info from the receptionist. Let them know your problem and ask if the counselor works these issues. If not, there is a good chance they may be able to point you in the right direction.

A small amount of detective work can help you find a counselor that will help you work through any issues and get you on your way to living your best life!
