How to Find a Therapist

Having trouble figuring out how to find a therapist? It’s a necessary and daunting task when beginning or continuing your mental health journey. It also can feel impossible! In some places, like here in San Antonio, there are so many therapists to wade through.

However, it’s a huge decision no matter how many options you do or don’t have! This is, after all, the choice of who will be helping guide your journey for the foreseeable future. There’s no wonder why you’re seeking help, and it’s good that you are! We hope this blog can serve as the guide to your guide. Let’s talk process:

Hands down, the most common way to find a therapist in 2022 is on the internet. Databases like Psychology Today and GoodTherapy make up the bulk of that, and those are really handy thanks to their filters. Between them, you can filter for male/female/non-binary providers, insurance taken, price per session, conditions treated, et cetera. The main downside is that not every therapist will have a profile listed.

You can also search on Google! This can also be as vague or specific as you want. If you know exactly what you want, you can search something like “seasonal depression therapist downtown San Antonio who accepts BCBS.” If you’re just peeking around or don’t know yet what you want out of therapy, you could also just search “therapist in San Antonio.” This approach will yield TONS of results. You can then look through therapists’ websites until you find one you want to try, or try this trick!

Therapists are often pretty well connected, so you can call one in the area, explain what problem you’re having, and if they’re not a good match they’ll likely be able to send you along to someone who is!

This is enough to begin wading through all the possible options in your area. In the next blog, we’ll discuss what makes a good match, so keep an eye out for that on our blog page!
